The Independence Day Celebrations

15th August is a very important day. We became free on this day. The English left India for ever in 1947. Since then we have been celebrating the Independence Day every year on 15th August.

This year it was celebrated with special interest. Early in the morning prayers were offered in temples, churches and mosques. At 8.30 a.m. on the Police Ground, parades and military salutes were worth-seeing. At 10.30 a.m. national flags were hoisted on all Government public and private buildings. With flags in their hands and joy in their hearts school children paraded along the main roads of our town. Special meetings were held in schools and colleges. There were games and sports also. Sweets were distributed among students and prizes awarded to the winners. Special scholarships were also given.

At 2 p.m. The students of our college planted fruit trees in the college garden. There were as many kinds of fruit trees as there are classes. These trees are still growing and we are proud of them.

At 4 p.m. grand procession was taken out from the Town Hall. It passed through the four big markets. It returned to the Town Hall at 6 p.m. Then a public meeting was held. Speeches were made. Tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Every speaker talked of the –political sufferers and of those who have laid down their lives for Mother India.

In the night, all the markets were tastefully decorated and illuminated. The best illumination was at the Railway Station. At every crossing gates had been built, bearing the names of different national leaders. Late in the night there were parties and dinners followed by Kavi Sammelans and Mushairas. Thus they kept awake till the next morning. The events of the day are still fresh in our memory.
