The project of Delhi Metro is sure to change the existing state of transport. The idea of Metro train in Delhi is not a new, in fact the idea was brought into consideration about some fifty years back, but the bureaucracy red—tapism made it to take a such a long period to some into reality. However in December 26, 2002, people of Delhi got the first ride in this much awaited dream train.

    The people of Delhi are happy with the service rendered by the Metro because now they have an alternate to the suffocatingly and ill-managed packed blue line buses and the inadequate service of D.T.C and C.N.G buses. With the Metro option, the passengers are not only save from the inconvenience of the road transport, but they also experience a world class service at very affordable fares. Metro train same like a warm sunshine on a foggy morning.

    With the start of Metro, the burden on the roads reduced. People of Delhi won’t have to wait for the buses for the long time. It saves the valuable time and money too. The coaches of Metro are fully air-conditioned. Another outstanding feature of the netro is that it is very useful for handicapped. The speed of Metro Rails is good enough to meet the needs of growing population in Delhi. It also saves the people from population of vehicles.

     The construction work of the Delhi Metro is on at a considerable pace and it is hoped that the people of other areas in Delhi will soon be able to avail of this amazingly comfortable train service. It is foreseen by many that at the completion of this project, Delhi will have a better train facility than even Japan and North Korea, the countries which provided the present metro trains to India.

Delhi Metro Train

The Delhi Metro was started on 24th December 2002.

It has become the second underground rapid transit system in India, after Kolkata but Delhi Metro has a combination of elevated, at-grade and underground lines.

It has won numerous environmentally friendly awards from many reputed organisations including the United Nations, RINA, and ISO.

It was the first metro rail in the world to be ISO 14001 certified for its environmentally friendly construction.

Delhi Metro is a pride of Delhi. Now other states government are seeking Delhi Metro help to increase its lines to other states cities.

Delhi’s Metro Rail

In 1981 the total number of motor vehicles on the roads of Delhi was 5.4 lakh. In the gap of just two decades that is in 2001 it rose to 40 lakh. The large scale rising trend of migrants to Delhi for jobs and other purposes had earlier made it necessary for the authorities to study the feasibility of introduction of a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Delhi.

As a result of the approval by the Government, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) came into existence on 3 May 1995 under the Companies Act, 1956. The Phase-.I was to be completed by September 2005. This phase comprised 50 km area over an elevated surface area and 12.5 km area covering an underground corridor. The first section connecting Shandara with Tis Hazari was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 24 December 2002. The Phase I was declared to have been completed when Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh inaugurated it on 30 December 2004.

As a matter of fact, of the three lines pertaining to Phase-I, Yellow line and Red Line had been completed before schedule but the Blue Line connecting Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place) and Dwarka More was behind schedule. Yellow Line connects .Central Secretariat with. Delhi• University. It passes through New Delhi RailWay Station, Chawri Bazar and Kashmere Gate. The Red Line connects Shandara with Rithala and passes through Kashmiri Gate.

Delhiites were feeling suffocated due to pollution. The main reason for which was the running of lakhs of motor vehicles on its roads. The Delhi Metro is eco-friendly and it was estimated that it would finally reduce the number of buses alone by about 2600. This would reduce pollution and save not only fuel but also many hours by increasing the speed of buses by easing traffic jams and congestion.

Delhi Metro would also enhance passenger safety and reduce the number of accidents. It was estimated that over 21.5 lakh commuters would travel by the Delhi Metro per day. There would be 41 stations in all and the frequency of service during peak hours would be 3 minutes.

The Delhi Metro is a state-of the-art transport. Though such Systems exist in cities like Washington, Paris, New York, London and Kolkata, it is a dream come true for Delhi. Travelling by it is, indeed, a hilarious experience. One gets tickets in the form of plastic-tokens, which t•ive computer chips embedded in them. Placing the token on the specified area at the gate gives a commuter access to the station. Confusion is ruled out, signboards all being in place. The doors open and close automatically.

The journey by the Delhi Metro is simply exhilarating. The train moves at a steady journey. The seats though metallic are quite smooth and comfortable. The stainless steel vertical bars looks very beautiful. There is a recorded announcement at each station telling its name and the fact whether the right or the Left doors will open. The train is air-conditioned.

There are certain strict restrictions in regard to travel by this train. Spitting is prohibited on the platforms. There is the minimum fine of Rs. 1000 if one takes photographs as it is prohibited on the Metro Network. There are hidden cameras to catch the lawbreakers.

The major part of the Delhi Metro has been built by the Japanese companies. However, Mr. E Sreedharan, the Managing Director, has risen to be one of ten most important persons in the world due to his spirit of devotion and dedication. Hence, it was in the fitness of things when he was conferred the Honoris Causa Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by Kurukshetra University.
