A Football Match

The game of football is one of the most vigorous and exciting games. It is exclusively an outdoor game. It is a game in which all the faculties, of body get a good exercise. An interesting thing about this game is that it is not at all expensive. Two referees and twenty two players are required to play this game. Its field is 100 yards long and 60 yards broad divided into two equal halves by a line called the ‘central line’. Though it is a foot-game but the goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands.

Recently I witnessed a football match that was played between two local football clubs. The match was played at the playgrounds of a local school. There were chairs on one side and rest of the ground was open for the spectators. The spectators crowded the venue and they were all excited. Both the teams were dressed smartly and seemed to be equally strong.

The referee blew the whistle. Both the captains shook their hands. The team winning the toss chose the side of its choice. The game started with the kick-off. The ball moved from one side to another. In the beginning both the teams seemed to be equally good. The players in blue uniform dominated. They penetrated into the defenses of their rival team but failed to score a goal. The players in red uniform got puzzled. They kicked the ball at random. Their captain re-invigorated them. He gave a pass to one of his players and he scored a goal with a strong hit. The goalkeeper jumped in one direction but the ball went in another direction. The spectators clapped continuously. A long whistle stopped the game. During the interval the players hurriedly drank some water and juice.

Again the match started with full excitement. In the first few moments, the blue players put pressure on the red players. Their left half made three hits at the goal of the rival, side but no success came their way. Thereafter the red players started fighting with all their might. Their left half gave a pass to right half and the right half kicked the ball straight into the goal. A goal was scored. There were loud cheers. A crucial stage came. But no more goals could be scored. A long whistle ended the excitement. The winning team received deafening cheers.

Both the teams gave a good show. The winners took a round of the ground. The losers congratulated the winners. I came back to home pondering over the usefulness of games.
