A Bus Conductor

A bus conductor is a useful member of society. His life looks cozy but-it is not so. He deals with commuters of all age-groups and from different strata’s of life. So, he has no alternative but to keep cool, be humble, be tactful, and be sweet tongued: He remains-cautious all the time. His experience makes him a good psychologist. He has to be tactful. If the situation demands he has to be rough and tough with those commuters who know no civility or etiquette.

A bus conductor performs a tough duty. In the morning he reports for duty at his depot. He collects bundle of tickets of different denominations. He keeps an account of the tickets received and the tickets sold. He keeps some ready change with him to facilitate his work usually he wears a uniform. He is equipped with a leather bag, a punching machine and a first-aid box.

His job is tough and keeps him on his toes. He goes on moving from one end of the bus to the other issuing tickets. He always runs short of time and fills up the chart while standing. He keeps his balance like an acrobat. He performs other duties also.

He gets the ladies’ seats vacated. Generally he has to be tough with those commuters who are not ready to vacate these seats. He regulates the entry and the exit of commuters. He conducts the bus and sees that it stops at the proper place. He keeps a watch on the ticketless travelers.

His duty in the morning hours, in the afternoon and late at night is quite light. But at other hours of the day it is very hectic and tough. He has to remain vigilant and tactful. This exercise tires him physically and mentally. After the duty hours he tries to puff his tiredness away through some puffs of a bidi or a cigarette along with sips of hot tea. Before boarding a bus that connects his house enrooted the hands over the cash to the cashier at the depot. If he wants he can write a short novel as he deals with life at close quarters. But he goes to sleep to get up again to be the lord of his bus. He deserves our respect and sympathy.
