Essay on “Nuclear Power” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Nuclear Power

As time passes and our would becomes more technologically developed there is a greater need for energy sources. Most of the fuels we use today are not renewable e.g. oil and coal.

Nuclear Power is a source of energy which has many benefits. Nuclear energy is less expensive because it is based on uranium which is very accessible. With little amount of uranium a great amount of energy can be produced. It is a reliable source to rely on as there is significant amount of it on the Earth’s crust.

One important advantage is that producing energy using Nuclear Power does not give off Greenhouse gases. Green house gases are gases like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide which are contributing to the Green house effect or Global Warming. The biggest advantage of Nuclear Power is the discoveries made in Nuclear Medicine, such as cancer therapy, CAT scan and MRI machines and the use of irradiation of food to kill bacteria.

Nuclear power has been in the last hundred years for the manufacture of Nuclear Weapons like A-Bombs (atomic bombs) and H-Bombs (hydrogen bombs). Nuclear Weapons are weapons of mass destruction. A single weapon can be capable of destruction. A single weapon can be capable of destroying of seriously disabling an entire city. In the history of warfare Nuclear Weapons have been used on two occasions, both during the closing days of world War II in Hiroshima when devise called ‘Little Boy’ was dropped and then three days later one in Nagasaki  called ‘Fat Man’.

It is a good idea to possess Nuclear Weapons if you are a ‘Super Power’. If a country feels threatened it can rely on Nuclear Weapons to protect them from the enemy. Examples of ‘Nuclear Super Powers’ are USA, Russia, United Kingdom and France.

Nuclear Weapons have many disadvantages. The use of them can lead to a world crisis as every time a bomb explodes the lives of millions of people are affected and those close to the explosion are vaporized in a split second. Nuclear Weapons are very expensive to manufacture even though the uranium is accessible.

Nuclear power has many disadvantages too. Nuclear plants are on of average 75% to 80% reliable. If an accident occurs, in USA for example, according to a 1992 study done by Sandia National Laboratories, it would result in deaths of thousands of people, latent cancers and the loss of billions of dollars.

We have all seen movies where whole cities have to be evacuated when a Nuclear Power plant is about to explode. That is fiction but can become reality.

One major disadvantage of Nuclear Power is that it makes variable amounts of radioactive waste. This waste is causing big problems for the world storage because of its irradiation. The nuclear waste has to be stored over a hundred year and the waste remains hot for thousands of years.

Some people say Nuclear energy is cheaper to make but this is not the entire truth. Since its beginnings, Nuclear Power has cost USA over 450 billion dollars nearly twice the cost of the Viet Nam war and the Apollo mission combined.

Although Nuclear Power has many disadvantages I think it is necessary as long as it is used for a good cause. The fossil fuels we are currently using for making energy are some day going to run out so we need other sources to rely on. If Nuclear Power is handled correctly the possibility of an accident is very  rare. Each year about 50000 people die due to the respiratory illness in America caused by the burning coal. The chance of a nuclear accident that would cause that kind of damage to humans is like 1 in every 250 years.

I think Nuclear Power is a good substitute to burning fossil fuels for energy as it does not contribute to Global Warming.

Although I agree with the use of nuclear energy I do not agree with the manufacture of Nuclear Weapons. I think that any object or instrument manufactured for the destruction of humanity should be forbidden. Nuclear Weapons not only cause massive destruction, the money that countries invest for the manufacturing and testing of these weapons can be used to feed millions of poor people.
