Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi believed that freedom was the birth-right of every person. He was the champion of the untouchables and upholder of the dignity of labour. To him God was Truth and Truth was God, He was popularly known as Bapu or the Father of the Nation.

The full name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. He saw the dawn of life on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar. His father Karam Chand was the Dewan of Rajkot and Bikaner. His mother Putlibai, a saintly lady, left indelible influence on his personality. He got married to Kasturba when he was just 13. In 1888 he left for England for higher studies and became a barrister. In one case he went to South Africa and he stayed there for 21 years. There he stood against the white man’s injustice towards the Indians who were called coolies. He had to face humiliation but he remained steadfast in his convictions. Afterwards he plunged into Indian politics and his only aim was to uproot the British rule and get freedom and independence for the country. He led four Civil Disobedience Movements and was imprisoned several times. In 1942, he led Quit India Movement which led to freedom in 1947.

Gandhi wore very simple clothes and took simple food. He was not only man of words but also of action. What he preached he practised also. He hated communalism in every shape.

Gandhi’s entire life is a saga of sacrifice, service, devotion and dedication. He freed millions from the shackles of caste tyranny and social indignity.

On January 30, 1948 he fell to the bullets fired by Nathu Ram Godse.

Gandhi was essentially a moral force, whose appeal is to the conscience of man and therefore, universal. This is an imperishable gift to humanity. He was a giant among the immortals. Generations will scarce believe that such a one as this, ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. He was par-excellence, unparalleled and unique.
