Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India and he held his post till 1964 when he died. He was born on November 14, 1889 with a silver spoon in his mouth. His childhood was privileged. He was entirely educated in England and became a barrister-at-law. He married Kamala Kaul in 1916 and in 1917, their only daughter ‘Indira’ was born.

On return from England he started practice at Allahabad High Court. He was drawn into the Home Rule Movement and came under the influence of Tilak. That way he found himself fully involved in the freedom movement. He came in contact with ‘Gandhi and became his disciple. He took part in the Non-cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movement. He was arrested time and again and had to spend several years in British jails. But he did not stop his activities for Indian independence. He served as President of the Congress Party from 1929 to 1931. This position he subsequently held six times.

Nehru wanted to build India a truly democratic and peace loving nation. Under his express guidance, India became an influential force within the Non-aligned Nations.

Nehru stands forth as a great apostle of peace, a master mind and ardent advocate of peaceful co-existence. He was a harmonious combination of the qualities of a great leader, an orator and a writer. It is not wrong to say that he is perfect synthesis of what is best in the East and the West.

Nehru is popularly known as Chacha Nehru. His birthday, November 14. is celebrated as the Children’s Day as he had immense love for the children. He was a great visionary. He had his hand in clouds but his feet were firmly planted on the ground. Under his leadership India took many long and high jumps in the field of prosperity and success on all fronts. He stood for non-violence and friendship among the people of the globe. He spread the ‘message of ‘Panchsheel’ and `disarmament’. He left behind a rich heritage of planning and development.
