Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill is sure to be remembered as one of the most famous personalities of the 20th century. His fame rests mainly on the heroic and successful leadership of the Allied Countries during the Second World War.

Churchill assumed the Prime Ministership of Britain at a very critical point when not only Britain but almost the whole Europe was threatened to be overtaken by the German Nazi hordes. Churchill declared that they would fight the enemy everywhere on land, in air and on water but they would not surrender. This instilled much confidence ‘ in the troubled hearts of his countrymen and the people of the Allied countries. After six years of fierce fighting trials and hardships, Churchill led the Allied Countries to the ultimate victory.

Churchill was born on 30th November 1874 and was the son of t, Lord Randolph Churchill, a descendant of Duke of Marlborough. He was not good at his studies but he managed to make it a career in the army. Then he proceeded to South Africa as a war correspondent of the Morning Post in the Boer War (1899-1900). He was taken prisoner by Boers but managed to escape and returned to England as a hero. Then he entered Parliament and represented the Oldham constituency in the House of Commons. In 1906, he became a Vice Minister and in 1911, First Lord of Admiralty. He was Colonial Secretary from 1921 to 1923. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was invited by the British monarch to head the all party Government.

Churchill is also known for his grand style and masterly command of English language. He was the author of some very popular and readable books like The World Crisis, Gathering Storm and Aftermath. .Churchill also wrote his Memories of the Second World War (in 6 volumes) and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for this work. He died on 24th January, 1965.
