The Universal fame of Arthur Conan Doyle rests on his creation of `Sherlock Holmes’, one of the most wonderful and fascinating characters in the western detective fiction. Sherlock Holmes appeared as the most pleasing and entertaining character to the readers of detective fiction. Sherlock Holmes appears to the readers as a quiet, intelligent character who is so life-like, that readers forget that they are reading about a fictitious character.Holmes first appeared in Doyle’s story A Study in Scarlet that was published as a serial in the Strand Magazine. A better Holmes appeared in The Sign of Four (1889) a long series of short stories collected as Adventures (1891) and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902). A large number of stories that centre round Sherlock Holmes are collected in Adventures of Sherlock Holmes running into five volumes. In one of these books Doyle killed Holmes off but resurrected on the demands of the public. So far more than 175 films have been made on Doyle’s immortal character of Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Scotland. He was a doctor by profession. Later he turned to detective fiction writing and became a prolific writer of fiction. Doyle was interested in spiritualism also and believed in invoking the spirits of the dead. He was also a good, player of cricket and played in the first class matches as a member of the M.C.C. Once he had the unique achievement of taking the wicket of W.G. Grace, an extraordinary cricketer by all standards.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also a public spirited person who took up all kinds of causes. Once he got reopened the case of one Oscar Slater who was convicted of murder. On the basis of new investigations, it was proved that he was wrongly convicted for this crime. Similarly, on other occasions also, Doyle displayed his detective talent, just in the manner of Sherlock Holmes.
