Dr Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar was born in an ordinary family. When just 8 months old, he lost his father and was sent to his maternal grand-parents who brought him up. A family friend, seeing his aptitude for learning took him to Lahore for education.

He went to England after his M.Sc. on a fellowship. On his return Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya offered him professorship at the Banaras Hindu University. After his day’s work, young Bhatnagar used to spend his spare time in his personal laboratory. His laboratory was visited by P.C. Ray and Dr C.V. Raman. Both appreciated his ingenuity.

Dr Bhagtnagar is remembered for having established various chemical laboratories in the country. He was appointed the Director of Punjab University, Chemistry Department. In the meanwhile an Indus-trial Research Institute was set up in Calcutta and Dr Bhatnagar was invited to head it. He was awarded the tide ‘Sir’ by the British in recognition of his service to science, in 1941. As Pt Nehru was much in favour of scientific development, after independence, the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research was set up under the Chairmanship of Dr Bhatnagar.
