Russia: A mysterious power wielder

Born: 1872         Died : 1916

Gregory Rasputin was endowed with a mysterious personality and some extraordinary powers. He was one of the most powerful personalities of 19th century and wielded enormous power in the Soviet Union where people held him in awe.

This powerful man was born in a farmer’s family in 1872. He was a man of religious values and became known for some correct prophesies. At first, he was looked upon as a hermit. But, then he misused his powers and capability which led to his downfall and death. After winning over the hearts of farmers and workers of his area, Rasputin gained entrance to the palace of Czar at Petersburg. Czar Nicholas II’s son Alexis suffered from Haemophilia, which at that time was an incurable disease. Rasputin alleviated his suffering in an astonishing manner. The Czar was so pleased that he gave Rasputin a high post in the palace. Taking advantage of the Czar’s preoccupations with a war, Rasputin won the confidence of Czarina. Rasputin became all powerful in 1906. This unbridled power went into his head. He started tormenting his opponents and ruled most autocratically. His opponents hatched a conspiracy to do away with him. He was first poisoned but he did not die. He was then shot but survived. He was then stabbed and his body was thrown in the icy water of a river. How he survived the poison and gunshot is quite mysterious. It is taken to be a sign of his extraordinary powers. He died on December 12, 1916.

His despotic acts paved the way for Russian revolution of 1917. He would have been hailed as a great man if he had used his talents for the welfare of his people.
