England : The Longest Reigning Monarch

Queen Victoria is the longest reigning monarch of Britain and her reign represents one of the most eventful periods in British history. She succeeded to the Britain throne on the death of her uncle William IV in 1837. At that time, she was an attractive and intelligent 18 year old girl. When she died in 1901, she had reigned for 63 years which is the longest reign among all the British monarchs. Victorian era in England witnessed many important reforms in political, social and economic fields. Great progress was made in the industrial field also. British empire also expanded and at the end of the 19th century, a quarter of the world’s land surface was under British domination. Victoria took keen interest-in both domestic ‘and international affairs. During her reign, Britain achieved many notable successes in foreign policy. In 1876, the title of ‘Empress of India’ was conferred on Queen Victoria as India was under British rule at that time. The golden jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign was celebrated in 1887 with great enthusiasm. She was very popular among her countrymen. She was related to almost all the royal families of Europe.

She was born in the British Royal family and was the daughter of Duke Edward of Kent. From her early age, she was a simplicity-loving and disciplined lady. She was married on 10th February 1840, to the German Prince, Albert, at the St. James Palace Church. She had nine children, one of them was Edward VII who succeeded her in 1901. Her husband Prince Albert, died in 1861 at a very early age and she went into deep mourning isolating herself from public life. It was largely at the persuasion of Disraeli that she came out of mourning and started taking part in public affairs again. She died on 22 January 1901, at the age of 82.
