Sweden : Votary of socialism and disarmament

The shocking news that the Prime Minister of Sweden, Olof Thad been shot dead when he was walking towards his residence  with as his wife after witnessing a movie, stunned the people of hi  his own countrymen. The late Prime Minister was counted as a firm friend of our country. He was a votary of socialism and disarmament and was one with India in both these matters. His death snatched away a proponent of world peace. For three decades, he was a tall figure in European politics who propagated the cause of socialism and world peace. He was the foremost politician to condemn American intervention in Vietnam and had made efforts to end the Iran-Iraq war in Middle East. He was popular all over the world for his liberal outlook and his tragic death in March 1986, left a void in international affairs.

The motive and reason for this dastardly killing has not yet been found out. Investigations into this assassination have cost billions of dollars but have proved fruitless. Some suspect the hands of Iran or Bofors company behind this murder. Palme had prohibited sale of arms to Iran by the Swedish company Bofors. He also desired to find the truth behind Bofors paying commission for sale of arms. It is pertinent to note that three journalists who were investigating transactions of this company, as also officers connected with this probe, had also been murdered.

Olof Palme was born on 30 January, 1927 at Stockholm. He took his degree in Law from Stockholm University and in 1950 joined Social Democratic Party. He was elected to the Parliament in 1958 and was appointed advisor to the then Prime Minister. He worked as minister in different departments and became Prime Minister in 1969. He was posthumously awarded ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Peace Prize’. An international peace prize has been instituted in his memory.
