Madan Lal Dhingra

India : A Fearless Young Revolutionary

Born AD 1887             Died : AD 1909

Madan Lal Dhingra will always be recalled as one of those fearless young revolutionaries who jumped into the fight for freedom without ever looking back at life, family and parents. Madan Lal will remain immortal as a young rebel who wrecked vengeance on the English oppressors in their own country. He avenged their tyranny in India, and on Indian public by killing the guilty in their own land.

Dhingra was born in a well-to-do Khatri family of Punjab. After graduating from the Punjab University, he went to England for further studies. But, when he learnt of British oppression in India, he shot dead two officers.

Madan Lal Dhingra was only 22, young and full of happy dreams. But, he sacrificed happy and secure future for his motherland. It was but a small sacrifice for a big cause. During his trial, he admitted that he had taken the extreme step for his motherland and added, “In the service of my country I have nothing but my blood,” such words, such courage —Madan Lal Dhingra’s name is immortal.

Although the propounders of non-violence downgraded the Indian revolutionaries, this does not, in any way, reduce the importance of their deeds for a noble cause. Can one ever question those sentiments because of which they sacrificed everything at the altar of their motherland?

This great revolutionary died in the same jail where Sardar Udham Singh was immortalised. Madan Lal Dhingra was a symbol of the youth of his time who were strongly opposed to the oppressive measures adopted by the British ruling India with an iron hand. It was an insult to them and their motherland which they could not tolerate.
