J. Krishnamurti

India : A World Teacher

Birth : 1895       Death : 1986

Jiddu Krishnamurti was one of the profoundest thinkers of the modem age. He gave a new meaning to spiritualism and salvation and brought them to the level of the common people. He had no faith in traditions, prayers and the institution of ‘Guru’ or the ‘Master’ and his thinking rose much above the identities of motherland, nation, language and heredity. In the beginning, he was associated with the Theosophical Society but broke off completely from it in 1929. Thereafter, he toured through Europe, America, Australia and other countries preaching the philosophy of truth. To Krishnamurti the whole life was a sort of meditation and the aim of every human being was to seek the ultimate truth. He used to say ‘We have to give birth to a new man’. Man needs a new type of education which can enable him to seek truth without any pre-conceived opinion. A mind that is full of traditional thinking, beliefs, sayings and examples is devoid of any creativity and it is only an imitator mind. A mind which is as clear of presumptions as an empty cup can only perceive the truth.

Jiddu Krishnamurti was born into a Brahmin family in the then State of Madras in 1895. When he was just eleven years of age, Dr. Anne Besant took him from his father. He was initiated into the teachings of Theosophical Society and got good education in a sophisticated atmosphere. In 1929, however, he dissociated himself from the Theosophical Society. By this time his name had spread to all corners of the world as a philosopher and spiritual master. J. Krishnamurti was also a very good Writer and his books contain his philosophical thoughts and teachings. More than 25 books have also been written on Krishnamurti. Dr. Anne Besant compared Krishnamurti to Lord Krishna and Jesus Christ. J. Krishnamurti was an extremely handsome man. Scholars from all parts of the world were always eager to meet and talk to him. Krishnamurti died in America on 17th February 1986. He remained a bachelor lifelong.
