Italy : Writer of immortal fame

This prolific writer, who is considered equal in rank to such literary ‘giants as Goethe, Virgil, Shakespeare, Kalidas and Homers played a key role in the enrichment of Italian language and literature.

Dante was born in Florence (Italy) in AD 1265. Dante studied Latin, Greek, science, music, philosophy and grammar. He once fought in a war on the side of Florence. As he had political acumen, he went to Pope as an ambassador in 1301. Taking advantage of his absence, his opponents seized power and exiled him from his native country. He remained in exile for nineteen years and died in 1321.

Dante shall always be remembered for his immortal work Divine Comedy. Dante was inspired to write this book because of his love for a beautiful woman named Beatrice. His another famous book La vite Ntova was also based on his love for Beatrice. Dante met this girl when he was only nine. He became enamoured of her. When he met her for the second time at the age of 18, she was already married to another man. Beatrice died at the young age of 26. Dante could never overcome his grief. Divine Comedy was the result of his distress and grief. Dante is the hero of this epic and Beatrice the heroine. The first part of this epic describes the hell, the second part deals with the Earth and the last part with the heaven. Virgil and Beatrice are his associates in this imaginary journey through heaven and hell.

Dante was an optimist. He considered vanity, hatred, laziness, greed and overeating to be sins. Through his book Divine Comedy he has exhorted men to follow the oath of right conduct.
