Charlemagne was born in Frank tribe. His father, Pepin, was the king of the Northern province, Charlemagne ascended the throne on the death of his father in AD 768. He had a gigantic personality with well disposed nature. He was a brave and good warrior. Charlemagne’ is remembered for re-establishing German Empire and for his attempts at reorganising Europe. For years, he expanded his empire by waging wars and conquered almost the entire Western Europe, including large parts of Italy. By AD 800, he was lording over Central and Western Europe. He used to fight in the name of God and converted most of Europe to Christianity. The Pope crowned him as ‘Emperor of Holy Rome’.

At that time, Spain was under Muslim rule. In Baghdad, Haroon-Al-Rashid was the Khalifa (ruler). Charlemagne attacked Spain and conquered a large portion of it. While Haroon-Al-Rashid signed a treaty with him offering him gifts to ward off war. Thus, Islam could not reach Europe.

Charlemagne started studies at an advanced age. He learned to read but could not write. He had many scholars in his court. He gave education a new dimension by spreading network of schools and colleges. He established libraries and churches throughout his empire. He kept in touch with other independent rulers by regular correspondence. It is unfortunate that this great empire disintegrated after his death.
