Audio Scripts and Answer Key

TASK 1

You will listen to some tips for maintaining healthy skin. Read the notes given in your worksheet, then listen to the tips and complete the notes with one or two words only. You will listen to the recording twice.

Here are simple tips that can help you prevent various skin problems. Hot water baths remove oils from your skin. So limit your bathing time and use warm rather than hot water. Avoid strong soaps and detergents as they can also strip oil from your skin. Instead choose mild cleansers for bathing and washing. After bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins to look and feel your best. Stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger various skin problems. So take steps to manage your stress and make time to do the things you enjoy to have healthy skin. Task 2

You will listen to a girl and her friend having a conversation about benefits of travelling. Read the statements below, then listen to the conversation and choose five of the options A- H which are correct.

Girl: Hi, how’s life? I didn’t see you in the holidays. Where have you been?

Boy: I had gone with my family on a trip to the North East.

Girl: That sounds great! So you had lots of fun.

Boy: Yes, it was a lot of fun.

Girl: You and your family seem to love travelling.

Boy: Yes, we do. Travelling has many benefits.

Girl: I know….such as having fun and getting to spend time with our family. I feel travelling gives us a break from our day to day routine and provides us an opportunity to relax.

Boy: Well, yes. It is said travelling refreshes our mind and clears off stress and so improves our overall health. That’s

definitely there. But travelling also helps us broaden our mind.
Girl: What do you mean by that?

Boy: I feel travelling is a fun way to learn not only about new places but meet different people and develop an understanding about their culture. It opens our mind to new ideas and perceptions.

Girl: Umm … I never thought of it, but you are correct. Travelling helps us discover the similarities we have with other people as well as the differences between us and I guess all this helps us in becoming well informed and more tolerant individuals.

Boy: Quite correct. You know in addition to gaining knowledge of history and geography, travel also helps us to learn important life skills.

Girl: You mean … we become more independent.

Boy: Yes, we become more independent. We develop our communication skills as we interact with people from different backgrounds and with different experiences. We also learn to find our way in an unknown place amongst unknown people who may speak a different language.

Girl: Coming to think of it, travelling indeed seems to provide great opportunities for fun, adventure and discovery.

Boy: Yes, travelling helps us to enrich our lives by increasing our knowledge and widening our perspective. Nothing can replace the unique experiences that travelling offers. You know the great poet William Blake has said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” Travelling also creates beautiful memories for a lifetime. So now you know why I love to travel.

Girl: Yes and now I too feel inspired to plan a trip in the autumn break. I’ll take some suggestions from you since you travel so much.

Boy: Sure, any time. Travel the world – learn, see, absorb and enjoy. All the best!

TASK 3
You will listen to five people expressing their views on sports. Read the statements given in your worksheet, then listen to the extracts and match each statement A – G to each speaker 1 – 5. There are two statements you do not need. You will listen to the recording twice.

1. Have you noticed that people who are into sports learn to manage time efficiently? They start to value time more in their life. Sports help them prepare, schedule, and meet their deadlines well. Playing a sport also involves directed thinking. To play well one needs to focus and not be distracted. This is the key to success in personal life as well. (61)

2. Teenagers who play sports are more satisfied with their lives than those who do not. In fact playing any kind of sport brings out the leader in you. One learns to handle pressure and perform under any given circumstances. Sports makes a person dig deep into themselves to give out extraordinary performances when needed. It also facilitates an inward journey of self-discovery. (61)

3. Sports helps one in the development of teamspirit. By playing sports, children learn how to get along with their peers and interact positively with their coaches and elders. It teaches them to communicate with them and work together as a team. They are less likely to become selfish when they grow up; they are caring and get along better with others.(61)

4. Playing a sport is undoubtedly a fun activity. It’s in fact a great source of entertainment. At the same time it goes a long way in keeping you physically fit as well as stress-free and mentally strong. When weighed down with studies or work, taking a break to play some sort of sport helps you feel better and less stressed out. (61)

5. Sports helps one deal with success and failure with a positive spirit. Playing sports trains us to accept defeat gracefully and move on. We learn to be cheerful even in the face of defeat. We learn that winning and losing is a part of life, one should not feel disheartened at losing, but move on and strive more for the next time.(62) 5 marks

TASK 4
Your School Counsellor has been asked to address the students in the school assembly and share some tips for getting over the fear of exams. You will now hear the speech given by the Counsellor. Read the questions given in your worksheet, then listen to the extract and choose a or b or c for each question. You will hear to the recording twice.

Good morning, dear students. My regular interaction with many students has shown that many of you feel scared of exams. But if you are well prepared, there is no need to feel scared. Actually many students don’t know how to study and prepare properly for exams. So today I’m here to share with you some tips that I’m sure will benefit you.

First while in class, it is important to listen attentively to the teacher. Also take notes for taking notes will help you comprehend and recall information that you have learned. You must not hesitate from asking questions to clarify your doubts. Questions can help you understand key concepts and ideas about a certain topic. Doing homework regularly is of great help. Homework exists for a reason; it is meant to show what you are able to do at home without the class environment, and it is meant to assist the learning process. Next, while doing self-study, you should always start with studying the easiest topic first. Develop the habit of skimming or quickly glancing through whatever it is that you have to read, before you actually read it. It has been shown that skimming a section before reading it improves reading comprehension.
Reread notes that you have taken down in class. Reading notes can improve reading comprehension dramatically; it can drastically improve your understanding of what you are reading. Furthermore, it will be easier for you to answer questions that follow; if you don’t remember the answer to a question, all you would have to generally do is to quickly check your notes. Next, I would say there is no getting away from hard work. You have to study hard. But there are many little things that can greatly assist memorization. You can try making study acronyms or songs. For example, a song to remember when Columbus sailed to America: In Fourteen-hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
Finally, I would suggest that you form or join study groups. A study group is an excellent way to share and clarify information. Don’t be shy in asking your friends or siblings for help. Often your older siblings may know things which you do not and can help you with your school work. You could also perhaps ask someone older in your family to review and guide you in your studies.

I do hope you will use these tips and be more confident. (403) 6 marks
